Watson Lake
We left Watson Lake yesterday and finally have Internet. Not very good service but I will try to get this out.
This will be a long blog so I may have to split it into 2 parts.
We left Dawson Creek June15 headed NW on the Alaska Highway. We took a detour on one section of the original AK hwy to this curved wooden bridge. It is the only original bridge left. It is also the only curved wooden bridge in North America. It is still rated for 20 tons.
We saw our first moose today.Luckily it was in a place I could stop, get out and take a picture.
And then another moose.
Stone Mountain sheep. It's amazing how steep Stone Mountain is and how easily they climb it and how they find enough food.
This Chipmunk found his food.
The scenery along this route was beautiful.
This stretch of the AK Hwy is very winding and lots of up and down.It has the highest elevation on the highway, almost 4,000 feet. It is one of the prettiest parts also. We had 190 miles of this today.
Enlarge the shirt picture to see what they say about this stretch of road.
We had to stop at beautiful Lake Muncho. Its hard to see but there were snow capped mountains at both ends of the lake. The water is a n aqua color.
Freddy wanted to stay here and play.
Our first black bear sighting, a baby. We did not see momma but I still got out to get this shot. I was watching very closely for momma.
We saw her about a 1/4 mile down the road after we left baby.
Bob Beers and I discussing parking at Sikani Chief
After stops at Sikani Chief and Fort Nelson,
the 3rd nights stop was at Laird Hot Springs to soak in the spring. There are 3 level of tempatures in 3 stages, hot, hotter and hottest. I tried the hot and hotter. That was enough.
Then on to Watson Lake and Sign Post Village.
This sign and the Florida on Safari sign below are the ones I put here in 2007.
This was started in 1942 when some US soldiers put up a sign post showing the direction and distance to their home towns.
In June 1988, there were 6281 signs here, in September 2010 there were 71,273
