Chicken AK
We are finally back in the USA, Tok, AK. We arrived in Chicken AL 2 days ago. Internet was very bad so no blog. I will try to catch up now. It will take 2 blogs.
First the one I meant to send in Chicken.
Welcome to Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada. This was a gold mining town. The Yukon River and the Klondike River meet here. In its time, it was a very wild town. Lots of miners and cooperation's trying to get the yellow metal.
They had several large dredges here. They were totally built here with all the parts shipped in. This one, dredge #4 was built 18 miles from where it is now. It was floating in its own pond. It would dig ahead of itself and deposit behind it, thus moving its pond and itself. As it went it removed the gold as it deposited the earth behind.
.After the dredge tour, Cathy had to pan some more.
Up on the Dome with the Yukon river in the background.
12:30 at night in the campground.
The early Dawson City residents did not understand permafrost. They built buildings , heated them and the permafrost below melted. This is thew result.
A must visit is to Diamond Gerty's saloon and gambling house. It is a replica of the gold rush days.
Can Can Girls and their show.
And of course, Gerty. She loved Win's hair.
Robert Service had a cabin here where he wrote many of his poems. Jack London also lived here.
Robert Service's typewriter.
This picture does not show what I wanted it to show but It is where the Yukon and Klondike rivers meet.
More tomorrow when I bring you up to Tok, AK
