Haines II

Still in Haines. Lots to do here.

I'll start where we left off, entering Haines. Just another beautiful Alaskan town.

Gas is not cheap here but still about 60 cents cheaper than Canada.

Haines harbor.

Lunch overlooking the harbor. Bison burgers with fries and a glass of Alaskan Amber. Doesn't get much better than that.

Another harbor view.

We went on a rafting trip through the Chilkat Eagle Preserve. This time of the year, there are eagles but not like November. In November, there are more eagles here than any other place in the world at any time. They converge here to feast on the salmon runs in the very shallow water.

Win and Betty looking for eagles.

Great scenery along the way.

An eagles nest

Here's one. We eventually saw 41.

At the end we had a good lunch and hot coffee and cocoa waiting for us.

That evening we went to the state park for some bear watching. Saw another eagle.

Saw mama bear fishing. She was heading my way so  I shot this then left.

One of the 2 baby's caught one and was eating it. Look close. I only took one of this then left also.

Cathy captured this eagle in flight. Very hard to do.

Next day a train ride from Skagway up through the mountains along the miners trail.

 The train

Our group had its own car.

 This trip had tight turns,

water falls,

scary bridges,

and great scenery.

The train does have to go through tunnels.

Past the American/Canadian border and back.

Along the way, there is the trail of 1898 that the miners had to go on with 1,000 pounds of supplies per person.

Another scary trestle.

Sheer cliffs.

And a beer at the end.

Its Saturday morning, we are packing up to leave Haynes. We go back to Haynes Junction YT for an overnight. We may or may not have cell service and Internet for the next four days. We will be in Hyder AK then.
