Haines, AK

My last posting was from Tok, AK. We have not had Internet since then.

We left Tok heading for White River, YT on the Alaska Highway. We traveled on the section Alaska Highway we had not been on yet. We bypassed it when we went to Dawson City, YT and Chicken, AK via the "Top of the World Highway"'
 Lots of good scenery here.

We could look at these mountains forever.

These are the Wrangle/St Elias mountains. The Wrangle/St Elias National Park is 6 times larger than Yellowstone and contains the largest mass of glaciers in North America. The NP is larger than Rhode Island.

The roads started out good but went bad soon. There was a stretch that held us down to 15 MPH for about 10 miles.

Our next stop was in White River at a campground owned by Amanda. In 2006, she came here on vacation from England, saw that it was for sale, and bought it from Bob. He is still here and quite a character. This is his pride and joy army troop carrier left over from when the Alaska Highway was built. The army left a lot of equipment here after WW2.

I wanted to drive it, but it was Bob's

He did take us for a nature ride.

The remains of one of the original Alaska Highway bridges.

A miners cabin still standing from the gold rush days.

A large campfire after we got back. Cathy is 3rd from left.

Bob B, Win, Harry and  Arnie blowing birch bark moose horns.

Left White River, still seeing scenic mountains.

Parked along the way next to Richard and Faye taking pictures.

At one stop, there was a piece of equipment left over from WW2 that had a black soldier replica in the drivers seat. This part of the road was built by a regiment of black soldiers.

More scenery. Still part of the St Elias mountain range.

Destruction Bay lake is so pretty.

except near the south end. Near the island, the water is a deep aqua color, as it gets further south (nearer to us) it gets silty from the glacier run off.

More glaciers

and more

and more

We left Haines Junction heading for Haines, AK.

For a change, a great, smooth road.

But more great scenery.

and glaciers.

and more glaciers.

And more

and more

and more

still more. You get the idea of how many glaciers are here.

And then, back in the USA.

The road to Haines runs along the Chilkat river. Chilkat means many fish because it is one of few rivers that have all five type salmon in it.

There are fish traps put here by the game and fisheries dept. to count and tag fish.

More of the river.

The sign says it all.

More on Haines later.
