Kewennaw "Copper Harbor" Peninsula
From Rapid River, we drove back north to Hancock, MI. We wanted to see Copper Harbor.
It is only about 1 1/2 hour drive.
The open roads up here are very smooth and the scenery is great. A very relaxing drive.
These signs are very common. Just past the sign is a strip across the road so that when the road is plowed, snowmobiles can still cross.
Even though it was a short drive, when you see a park this nice at lunch time, you have to stop.
Finally in Hancock
A nice spot in the county park.
Right on the canal that separates Houghton and Hancock.
This peninsula is why we are here.
On the way, we stopped at Jacob's Falls
Not a big falls but pretty.
Along the road, lake Superior.
Ship probably heading to Duluth, MN
Eagle Harbor Light Station
We did not climb this lighthouse.
Built in 1871.
Still a working light maintained by the USCG.
Shipping on Lake Superior goes from Duluth, MN, past this point to the Soo Locks.

The earlier freighters were only about 750 feet long. There are still a lot of them here.
The newer ones are 1000 feet long and 105 feet wide.
The sea going or "salties" have tapered bow.
The grain they haul is mostly Wild Rice from MN.
It is around 400 miles from Duluth to Sault St. Marie.
From an observation post, Cathy with Lake Superior in the background.
lots of these beaches along the route.
Into Copper Harbor. We were going to eat here but every thing we were interested was closed on Monday.
Another reason for coming here, to us, the end of US41. Actually, it is considered the start. It ends in Miami, FL.
In the past, we have been to the southern end of I75 and US41, on this trip, we have been to the northern end of both.
This is the end of US41.
This is a serious snow fall record.
This is the height of the snowfall.
Our favorite restaurant. We ate here three times, different choice each time, never a steak, loved it each time.
