Camp Verde, AZ
After the balloon fiesta, we left for Sun Valley AZ. It is 12 miles west of the entrance to the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park.
Freddy is my lookout.
Crossing into AZ.
From Albuquerque to Flagstaff I40 runs parallel to Route 66.
The RV park we stayed had been a small motel on Route 66. It is just a small RV park now.
We stayed here so we could go to the Petrified Forest
and the Painted Desert.
At different times of the day, you get different colors.
This was originally the Painted Desert Inn on Route 66. The US Government bought it and remodeled it and used it as the welcome center for the park.
Now they have a new welcome center and use this as an attraction.
There are several of these paintings done by an Indian artist.
The dining room.
Newspaper Rock dates back to 900 BC.
There were several rocks like this.
Now on to Petrified Forest. All US states have petrified wood but Petrified Forest is the largest collection of petrified trees in the world.
laying all over
another forest
very colorful
lots and lots of them
some very large
more color
After we got back from Petrified Forest, we were just chilling out. I looked out the window and saw a RV pull in that looked familiar. It was a close friend that I worked very close with the last few years of work. Neither of us realized we were any where close. It was a good reunion.
The next morning, back on the road.
The highest point in AZ seen from approximately 80 miles.
Along the way there is a meteor crater.
Their speed sign going in to the crater.
There is quite a complex here.
These meteor rocks are very heavy.
The crater, 3/4 mile diameter, 700 feet deep.
This tells it all.
Then back on the road to Verde Valley. Along the way, near Flagstaff, we encountered the first forest we had seen since Yellowstone NP. It didn't last long.
We are in Camp Verde, AZ for 2 weeks, then on to Grand Canyon.
