Cherokee and the Colonel

On the road thru the north Georgia mountains

past Tallulah Gorge SP (been there, done that)

Into North Carolina

The Smokey Mountains

not as tall as the Rockys but have their own beauty

 Through Cherokee to

our campsite next to the rapids

this made for some great sleeping at night.

and gave me a great place to read my kindle during the day.

I wanted to fish but pulled a muscle in my right shoulder. I had to watch other people catch trout, BUMMER

what a great site.

Cherokee is a nice little tourist town on the Cherokee reservation

Most of the town is made up of shops

Gold and ruby mining was big at one time so you have the spots for tourists to pan.

more shops

In the middle of town, there is an old water run, stone grinder mill where I got some good "stone ground grits".

I have not seen cap guns and caps in many years

We did find a very good restaurant, Paul's Place,

where we got some good Indian Tacos. I also had an Ostrich Burger that was really tasty but a little dry. It was better when I put some more mayonnaise on it,

When Cathy was 8 years old, she got stepped on, while sleeping in a tent, by a black bear. So we drove into the Smokey Mountain NP looking for the campground.

We saw these guys along the way

We did find the CG

She even remembered the bridge

such a pretty area.
She was so excited that she did not take pictures of the actual CG.  It had changed so much that we really did not care. All tent camping back then.

Back on the road. Going through the Smokeys

Mostly two lane road but sometimes a passing lane

Lot of mailboxes but do not see many homes. Most are quite a ways off the road.

As with most mountain roads, there are tunnels

Into Tennessee

past Rocky Top

still in the mountains

On to Corbin, KY, birth place of Kentucky Fried Chicken

In 1930, Colonel Harland Sanders came to Corban and worked in a gas station. He started selling food on the side

He eventually bought the gas station across the street, opened a motel and restaurant.
He invented his secret recipe and started pressure cooking chicken here.

The Sanders Cafe, parts of the original restaurant are still here.

A mock-up of the gas station, motel and restaurant

an early menu

furniture from the original cafe

breakfast was one of the most popular meals

the original kitchen

some things were replaced but with similar items of that era

he just gave me his secret recipe

back on I-75
through Ohio

into Indiana on I-74

to Batesville until after the 4 of July

We like Batesville for certain restaurants and we get to see some people we have met over the years.

Into our slot in the new section until after the 4th of July

Grilling ribs on a NuWave PIC using a grill pan heated to 240 degrees for 3 hours. Fall off the bone tender

Time to enjoy ribs with beans and potato salad.

Now we have to decide where we will go from here.
